Lucas Potgieter and his wife Zilla founded the Mossel Bay Baptist Bible Church in 2003 after they felt the call to plant a church in Mossel Bay. Services were held in their home in Dana Bay.

After two years or so, they returned to Pretoria and the church moved its services to the Dana Bay Community Hall. Pastor Willie van den Abele of the George Baptist Church served as the part-time pastor for some time.

In 2006, the church gained the use of a mobile classroom at a Christian school on Melkhout Street in Heiderand. By this time we were being served by various preachers, both local and from the George Baptist Church, as Willie could not continue due to his wife's failing health.

In 2009, one of the mainstays of the church passed away, and the remaining members had to decide whether to disband or to continue meeting.

Instead of disbanding, the church decided to continue, and moved once again, into the home of Cynthia Dewey.

Yvonne Murphy and Cynthia faithfully served the church and were able to obtain the support of Wesley and Val Gavin.

With their assistance, a decision was made to obtain premises in town, as a step towards reviving the church. The premises at 113 Montagu Street turned out to have been the previous home of the Mary Stobbs Abortion Clinic.

How fitting that the premises were turned from serving death to serving life!

The first Sunday service was held there on the 25th of April 2010, with Wesley Gavin preaching from Colossians 2. There were approximately eleven people in attendance.

The lack of men in the church meant that Yvonne and Cynthia were carrying the burden of the church, so they asked the George Baptist Church to assist, which they did by seconding Deon Barnard and Dempsey De Lange to serve as deacons. Deon and Dempsey and their wives Linda and Cathy quickly became part of the life and ministry of the church, with Deon and Dempsey serving as the church elders for several years.

During the COVID lockdowns, the church suddenly grew very rapidly, more than doubling in size in a very short period, and this necessitated our move to the current premises on Sioux Street in Voorbaai.

We thank God for the faithful men and women who prayed for and shepherded the church for many lean years and give God all the glory for our growth over the past two years.
